As crib safety standards change, we may also see some changes in how cribs are designed. If you could design your ideal baby crib, what features would it have? Share Your Ideas

I am barely over 5 feet. I could of NEVER been able to use the new cribs after my boys got bigger and had to put the mattress lower. This is a bunch of crap. I really agree with lots of other parents about people just not being responsible anymore or using comment sense!!

Keep the drop sided crib

It is funny how people believe whatever the government says to be the unchallenged truth. I bought a drop sided crib for my first and now I am going to use it for my second one in spring. I don’t know what cribs others got that had plastic parts but mine has 0 plastic parts, I had it custom made which actually cost me less then if I had bought it from the store. So I encourage everyone to find a local carpenter and have him to make the crib. Go with him and choose the material and choose the best you can afford, believe me it will not cost as much as you think.

Double Drop Side Crib

The ideal design would be a double drop side. The parts would be metal, not plastic. The drop side makes it much easier to put the baby in and take out. It is also much easier to change the crib sheets.

Springs instead of wheels for cribs

40 years ago my son's crib had springs on them instead of wheels. The springs were wonderful. The baby's bed was bouncy and my baby loved it. What happened to them? I can't find these wheels anywhere now for my grand baby.

who needs a crib

Both my kids slept with me 90% of the time. Who needs a crib? lol

Babies die in car accidents too...

There are so many unfortunate situations that can cause a young child or babies death, but banning everything that was involved in the death isn't the answer. Babies die in car accidents, you don't see cars being banned. I have a drop side from my first son that I will be using for my 2nd child due in the spring. I also love my bedding set - bumper and all, and will be using that in his/her crib as well. A babies death is a very devastating thing, I had a still born - it is heart wrenching. But I am not going to ban my womb because of the misfortune.

my thought

as with any other product you take that chance of hopefully buying a good product. you put your trust inthat company, but everything cannot always be 100% that is why it is your responsibility and use common sense. i woke up to see my grandsons face in a crib bumper. i was instantly horrified. i grabbed his arm and pulled him away from it. checked him immediatly, thank god he was ok.i think crib bumpers are a hazard and i will never use one again.. yes they look good in a crib, but really whats more important.

save a life

ideal crib would have hard mesh sides, [plastic], have the frame of the pack n play.with a very thin mattress. no bumper pads, i would rather have aleg or arm stuck then sufocation or death.i would like to see hard mesh on the bottom also, in case baby would get stuck in between, then baby could breath if baby could not lift head out of harms way. half mesh sides?, so baby can breath good, and arms and legs could not get stuck

one question?

so what happens to the kid when it gets bigger and the "lower side", of the crib with stationary sides, is to low? does anyone wonder if the kid might fall out? I like the drop down side, but my husband did put it together wrong the first time. Make sure to read instructions. ours is 5 years old and still functioning fine :) lets take responisibility for our kids, you can't blame everyone else all the time!!!!!

stupidity

So, a few people didn't follow instructions and their children suffered. How is that my problem? Why do my wife and I have to waste the $900 we spent on two perfectly functioning pieces of furniture because some people are too ignorant to read the instructions? It's a shame.

Drop Side Panic

One company puts out a bad design and the entire country decides to eliminate drop sides which can be perfectly fine as most are. Have all designs checked and tested by qualified regulators and safety label I just checked my daughters simmons drop down and am 100% cofident my granddaughter is safe. I have an AS degree in mechanical technology and 40 yrs of experiance as a consulting engineer which. The only thing I might change on the simmons is the plastic parts would be heavy gage stamped metal(steel).

seriously?

it's not the government's job to keep our children safe - how about we use common sense and not try and legislate everything?

get a grip

if even one child has died because of drop sided cribs...dont buy one. They might be more convenient just like not wearing a seat belt or not being in a car seat but we are smarter now. I spent my whole motherhood trying to keep my 4 kids safe and my grandbaby on the way will be the same. No drop sided crib. Sorry to hear about your son Tyler...omg

If mfgrs would stop building cheap junk

Drop sided cribs have been around for years. Only difference is in how cheaply they are made now. Of course they fall apart. Now every parent has to be inconvienenced, because mfrs have to make hugh profits. Children have died because of this. Why do we accept this so easily? All that will happen is when they are allowed to remake these drop sided cribs, they will have to make them right. Then it will cost a fortune. There is a method to this madness. How is it this does not bother everyone else?

Keep the drop side crib

My 1st grandchild is coming soon and I am thrilled that I kept the double dropsided crib from my sons 33, 29 and 23. The cribs made back then DID NOT have plastic parts that could break. The rails could not come down on their own. One had to lift the side rail up, then depress a bar beneath the rail with one's foot. Only then could the siderail be lowered. All 3 kids stayed in the crib until they were 3 and NEVER ONCE did the side fall down on it's own or by the children's actions. I worry greatly about the new cribs with a lowered side. If my sons were in those cribs, I am sure they would have experienced serious injury, if not death. My sons at age 1 would jump up and down in the crib and would have catapulted themselves out of the crib and become seriously injured. I see potential for much greater danger with these new cribs. Use metal parts on the drop sided cribs, improve the design and bring them back. Daughter-in-law is tall and wishes her parents kept her crib
