Lightweight baby strollers have come a long way from the basic umbrella stroller. Today's lightweight baby strollers have many of the same features as larger strollers, but the pared down versions are much easier for travel and quick trips to the mall or zoo. Here are ten great baby strollers that are lightweight, 20 pounds or less, but feature-heavy, allowing your baby to ride in style. All of these compact strollers should be easy to stash in a trunk without taking up too much space.
1. Maclaren Volo Lightweight Stroller
The ultra-lightweight Maclaren Volo (9 pounds) packs a lot of style and convenience into a small package. The Maclaren Volo stroller has a sturdy frame and beautiful steering. You won't struggle to make tight corners with this stroller. This stroller also comes with a sunshade, rain cover, carry strap and five-point harness. A small basket holds parent gear under the seat. The mesh seat is great for ventilation, but the seat doesn't recline. The Volo's one-hand fold and compact size when folded make it easy to load into your trunk. The 55 lb. weight limit is higher than most strollers.
2. Valco Baby Latitude Lightweight Stroller
Valco Baby's Latitude stroller is really a standard stroller in a lighter weight. It lacks nothing you'd need to get around town with baby, and even comes with a rain cover and boot cover that you might have to buy separately with other strollers. The handle is adjustable for your comfort, and you can also recline the seat from newborn position all the way to fully upright. A car seat adapter for Graco SnugRides and Britax Companions is also included. The roomy basket and compact fold make this a convenient choice for you, and the durability and 47 lb. weight limit mean you'll get several years of use from this stroller. The Latitude stroller weighs 19 lbs.
3. Chicco C6 Lightweight Stroller
The Chicco C6 is a basic stroller with a much sturdier frame and better steering than many of the less-expensive umbrella strollers. It's really easy to maneuver this stroller in tight spaces. Unlike bare-bones umbrella strollers, the C6 includes a sunshade, a reclining seat and a 5-point harness, which is nice for preventing forward-slumping if your child falls asleep in the stroller. There's a small basket underneath, too. This stroller weighs only 11 lbs. and folds very small for storage. The carry strap and carry bag make this a perfect travel stroller, too. It's suitable for use from 6 months, and has a 37 lb. weight limit.
4. Micralite Toro Lightweight Stroller
Though it's on the higher end of the price spectrum at over $500, the Micralite Toro offers smooth steering and a tight turning radius that may be worth every penny if you often push a stroller with one hand. The seat on the Toro stroller lays flat for newborns and also sits upright for older babies, plus has several positions in between. The weight limit is 40 lbs. A rain cover, foot muff and sun shield are included with the stroller, as is a nap bar. Folding and unfolding the Toro stroller is pretty easy, but requires two hands. The stroller itself weighs just under 19 lbs. Other nice features are the air-filled rear tires and the height-adjustable handles.
5. Zooper Waltz Lightweight Stroller
Weighing in at 17 pounds, the Zooper Waltz lightweight stroller has a removable front armrest for ease in getting baby in an out, a sun shade for baby and is compatible with some infant car seats. The Waltz folds compactly for storage and has a four-position reclining seat, so it can be used for newborns, but also for toddlers up to 55 lbs. Parents rave about the smooth steering and one-hand fold mechanism. This stroller also comes with a rain shield and a winter boot to keep baby's toes warm. The Waltz stroller stands on its own when folded, a bonus when you're trying to load the car with your arms full.
6. Simmons Onyx Lightweight Stroller
Simmons Onyx is a fairly basic lightweight stroller with some nice features, but it only costs about $150, which is an outstanding price for a sturdy stroller these days. The Onyx stroller weighs 15 lbs. and can accept a Graco SnugRide infant car seat, so it can be used as a travel system. This stroller folds and unfolds easily, and folds up small enough to fit in an overhead bin on an airplane. There's a small basket below the seat, and a sunshade is included. The weight limit for the Onyx stroller is 35 lbs.
7. Inglesina Swift Lightweight Stroller
The Inglesina Swift stroller is a good choice for older babies who can already sit up. It's a very sturdy, upgraded version of the classic umbrella-type stroller. Ergonomic handles make this lightweight stroller easy on a parent's hands, while the four-position reclining seat adds comfort for baby. The Inglesina Swift has a foot pedal mechanism for folding and features a sunshade, storage basket and five-point harness. Reflective piping is a nice safety feature for families who walk or travel a lot at night. The Swift stroller weighs 12 pounds and holds babies up to 35 pounds.
8. Peg Perego Pliko P3 Lightweight Stroller
Peg Perego was able to pack a lot of convenience features into 16 pounds with the Pliko P3 stroller. This stylish, lightweight baby stroller even features a rear footboard that allows a second child to ride. The Pliko stroller can be folded with one hand and is fairly compact when folded. The child tray opens for easy access, and it also can be removed entirely. With a washable seat, carrying handle, height-adjust handles, large basket and reclining seat, the only downside to this stroller is price ($350). The weight capacity of this stroller is 45 lbs.
9. Combi Flash Universal Carseat Stroller Frame
A carseat stroller frame can come in handy for parents of infants. At only 10 pounds, the Combi Flash lightweight stroller frame is easy to carry using the built-in strap. The frame accommodates most infant seats, which snap into the stroller frame, allowing parents to move baby easily from car to stroller. One-hand release makes opening the stroller easy even while holding an infant carseat. A roomy basket, stroller pack with bottle pockets and sturdy wheels round out this great infant stroller.
10. Kolcraft Tour Sport Lightweight Stroller
Kolcraft's Tour Sport is a great, basic umbrella stroller at an even greater price. Perfect for quick trips with older babies and toddlers, this lightweight stroller has a sun shade and padded, reclining seat for baby and a cup holder and gear bag for parents. The 35 pound weight limit is a little low, but otherwise the Kolcraft Tour Sport is probably the most feature-rich and sturdy umbrella stroller under $40. This stroller weighs just over 11 pounds and has a wider seat and frame than some inexpensive umbrella strollers.
