All About Baby Travel Systems

By Heather Corley, About.com

Travel systems are popular purchases for many first-time parents. Travel systems are also one of the baby gear purchases parents tend to regret if they're bought according to pattern instead of convenience. I made that mistake as a new parent, and while my daughter's car seat was perfectly fine, the clunky stroller broke fairly quickly. Some travel systems may be a good fit for some families, but there are other choices available that might also be worth a look. Read on to learn more about baby travel systems and check out individual travel system reviews.

Travel Systems Basics

The first step in choosing a travel system is determining your needs and baby's needs in a car seat and stroller. Remember that "travel system" is just a dressed-up name for a car seat and stroller that go together, so if you can't find what you need in a ready-made travel system, there are plenty of not-so-matchy combinations that might work perfectly for you.

Travel Systems Options

Can't find what you want in a ready-made travel system? One way to carry your baby's car seat without a big travel system stroller is a stroller frame. You can also choose one of the infant car seats that is compatible with a wide range of strollers, or choose a stroller that has a car seat adapter accessory.

Used Travel Systems and Travel System Safety

Travel systems can often be found at garage sales or on online trading or sales websites. However, if you're going to buy a travel system, I suggest that you look only at new ones. While the stroller is probably safe in most cases, it's hard to tell how a car seat was treated before it got to that sale, so it's best to pass up used car seats and err on the side of caution.
