Two baby bouncers we recommend on a yellow background

Verywell Family / Alli Waataja

Before graduating to gross motor skill-enhancing toys like tricycles and scooters, babies love the feeling of being gently bounced. Many bouncers rely on a baby's natural kicking movement to bounce the unit, while others are electric or battery-powered. The calming motion mimics what they experienced in the womb, which ultimately helps soothe them, especially if they're fussy. It's important to note that bouncers keep littles entertained during supervised awake time and are not for children to sleep in. Sleeping in a baby bouncer poses a risk of suffocation, which can lead to a potentially deadly outcome.

To find the best baby bouncers, we researched safety guidelines issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We also spoke to parents and medical professionals, including Elizabeth Murray, DO, MBA, FAAP; Benjamin Hoffman, MD, CPST-I, FAAP; and Molly O'Shea, MD, FAAP. Moreover, we tested baby bouncers in the lab with the help and input of Ebony Barrett, PNP, a board-certified neonatal nurse practitioner. With their guidance in mind, we researched dozens of top-rated baby bouncers in the market and considered their safety features, design, and value. We then narrowed our list to 16 baby bouncers, which we put through multiple tests at the Verywell Testing Lab in New York City.

During our test, seven parenting editors assembled the baby bouncers and strapped 15-pound or 20-pound sandbags into the seats' harnesses to replicate a child's weight. Our team of experienced parenting editors nudged the seats and bounced them repeatedly manually, with and without sandbags, to determine stability and ease of use. We also adjusted the recline and reexamined stability and ease of use on each incline level. Lastly, we folded the baby bouncers and carried them across the lab to assess their portability.

Pros
  • Bouncer or chair

  • Machine washable seat cover

  • Super stable with weight inside

Cons
  • Harness could use extra security for small babies

The BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss wins the top spot on our list for its versatility, style, and straightforward functionality. Its sleek design transforms from a bouncer to a toddler chair and doesn’t take up much space in either arrangement, measuring 31 x 15.5 x 22 inches. To turn it into a chair, remove the seat cover and flip it around to re-secure. In both modes, the bouncer reclines to three different positions, but the levers to make it lounge were tricky to adjust during testing. We found it helpful to hold the bouncer on its side or upside down to make the adjustment.

The seat cover comes in three materials—3D jersey (polyester, cotton, and elastane), 3D mesh (polyester), and quilted fabric (cotton)—and tons of stunning neutral colors (and a few patterns) to match any nursery decor. We appreciate that all three materials are machine washable (separately) in warm water with mild detergent. However, the seat cover should be line-dried only. Pulling the seat cover off to wash it is a piece of cake, and putting it back on is just as easy by securing the fabric with two hooks to keep it in place. Plus, all fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified, meaning they’ve undergone testing for harmful substances.

There’s no assembly necessary with this baby bouncer—it arrives fully assembled. In order to use it right out of the box, we had to unfold it (but that’s it). When empty, the bouncer feels shaky and unstable, so we were surprised by the night-and-day difference when we added a sandbag to the seat. During our test, the bouncer felt incredibly sturdy and secure at all recline levels, with just enough natural bounce to relax a little one. We also tested the stability in chair mode and received the same result; it never felt like the chair would tip or fall over.

The seat has great depth, and the straps on the restraint system can be changed effortlessly between two sizes for babies 8 pounds and up—though we wish the straps could tighten more to accommodate smaller babes.

One of our favorite features of the BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss is how compact and portable it is. It can fully flatten for transportation or storage, with 4 inches being its highest height when folded. The folding process isn’t difficult—a few clicks on the adjustment lever underneath the seat, and you’re good to go. It’s also lightweight enough (less than 5 pounds) to carry one-handed without strain.

The BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss is simple, but that’s what makes it so outstanding. While the price tag is higher than your average baby bouncer, this BabyBjörn pick is easy to use, compact, sturdy, and stylish. The company offers additional accessories you can purchase separately, like a carrying bag and toy bars.

We also tested the BabyBjörn Bouncer Balance Soft, which shares the same ergonomic design, portability, versatility, and quality. In fact, the only differences between the Bliss and the Balance Soft are the price (the Balance Soft is $50 more expensive), frame color, and the fabric (but the covers are interchangeable). Both these bouncers earned our seal of approval during testing.

Pros
  • Padded newborn insert/soft material

  • Rubber grip on base for stability

  • Compact fold (fits under couch)

Cons
  • Machine washable cover difficult to re-attach

The Ergobaby 3-in-1 Evolve Baby Bouncer evolves into three transformations: a newborn lounger, an infant bouncer, and a toddler seat. It reaps a similar compact size (33 x 16 x 22 inches) as the BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss, though we thought the padded newborn insert made the design look slightly bulky. Still, the fabric feels soft to the touch, almost like the material of your favorite sweatshirt. The seat cover is machine washable and simple to remove, although putting it back on was tough during testing.

To transform it from a newborn lounger to an infant bouncer, all you need to do is remove the newborn insert. When ready for the toddler seat, unbuckle the harnesses and remove the velcro crotch strap. You can tuck the remaining straps into the built-in pockets on the sides of the bouncer to keep them out of the baby’s reach. The harness feels secure to keep babies 5 to 29 pounds safe.

A foot pedal underneath the seat allows parents and caregivers to switch between three height positions, while a security lock maintains the seat in its position. We did encounter an issue with changing the reclines during testing. Unfortunately, the recline level continuously caught on the lower level, but after some trial and error, we finally locked it in the middle recline. Once you get the hang of it, maneuvering the pedal and adjusting the recline gets easier.

No batteries are necessary to make the Ergobaby Evolve Bouncer do its thing; a baby’s natural movement bounces the unit, but adults can manually bounce it for newborns, too.

The Ergobaby bouncer arrives folded in a box, ready to go. As part of our testing, we removed the bouncer from the box, unfolded it into position, and placed a sandbag into the seat to replicate a baby’s weight. This bouncer’s stability shines—it was the sturdiest bouncer we tested in the lab, thanks to the rubber on its base to prevent the unit from slipping and sliding on the floor. When loaded with a sandbag, the bouncer remained smooth, and the sandbag never moved or fell out when we bounced it.

The same foot pedal you use to recline the bouncer also folds the unit. We love how the bouncer folds completely flat for storage, even fitting under a couch in the lab. While it’s a little heavier (8.4 pounds) than the BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss (4.6 pounds), we still think it’s lightweight enough to pick up with one hand and carry around a room.

From its versatility to wonderful sturdiness, the Ergobaby Evolve Bouncer performed so well during our test that we consider it our best overall runner-up. Its stability alone is worth the peace of mind parents and caregivers get in return. You can even purchase a toy bar for extra fun.

Pros
  • Compatible with high chair

  • Padded newborn insert

  • Slim design

Cons
  • Does not fold

We love the slim profile and modern, high-end look of the Cybex Lemo Bouncer. It's ideal for small spaces, measuring 24 x 17.3 x 21.7 inches, and doesn't plug into an electrical outlet or require batteries—babies can bounce naturally by moving their bodies, or adults can lend a hand with manual bouncing. However, we need to note that the tag on the bouncer states babies can sleep in the bouncer, but the AAP and our experts advise against that. The company's warning manual also states the bouncer "is not intended for prolonged periods of sleeping." We, our experts, and the AAP do not recommend babies fall asleep in a bouncer due to the risk of suffocation and potential death.

One of the coolest features of this pick is that it's not just a bouncer; it also attaches to the company's matching high chair with adapters (sold separately) to create a taller infant lounger or toddler chair. If you choose not to purchase the high chair, you can still use the bouncer from birth and up to 20 pounds.

The bouncer features high-quality materials, including a mesh backrest to prevent littles from overheating. We love how the fabric feels plush and cozy with lots of cushioning. A padded infant insert cradles and supports the head and neck of newborns and removes for cleaning. However, the company doesn't specify whether you can machine wash or spot clean, only "gentle action wash with warm water." On the plus side, the fabric comes in five colors, including black and pearl pink.

Depending on which variation you buy (bouncer or high chair), some assembly is necessary. We only had to attach three parts for the bouncer, and everything feels sturdy on smooth or carpeted surfaces. The bouncer doesn't feel wobbly or unstable with the sandbag inside (and out). Using the bouncer is simple; buckle your child into the harness, and that's it. You can switch between two incline levels with the press of buttons on both sides of the bouncer.

Unfortunately, the Cybex Lemo does not fold for compact storage, but its slim design makes up for it. We carried the bouncer and a sandbag (one in each hand), and it always felt manageable. While not ideal for travel, it's a solid option for its simplicity and adaptability that grows with your child, allowing you to use it as long as possible at home or grandma and grandpa's house.

Pros
  • Music and vibration

  • Removable toy bar included

  • Sturdy and solid

Cons
  • Doesn't fold

In addition to its affordable price tag, we love the many other features of the Baby Trend EZ Bouncer, like its adorable style, removable toy bar, and calming vibration. While the bouncer doesn't feature a modern look, it comes in two sweet patterns. Moreover, a removable toy bar with two plushies promotes grasping and reaching and enhances hand-eye coordination. Inserting the toy bar into place makes a "clicking" sound, so you know it's secure.

Another highlight of this bouncer is its ability to play music and vibrate, which requires three C batteries (not included). You can't do both simultaneously; however, you can alternate between the two with the push of a button on the front of the bouncer. Choose from five songs or three vibrations speeds to help soothe a crying baby.

Babies weighing 6 pounds to 20 pounds can use this bouncer, according to the company. There's a reversible head support for newborns that's easy to put on and take off via Velcro. We appreciate how simple it is to remove the seat cover to wash—just unbuckle two clasps on the back and toss it into the washing machine. A three-point harness effortlessly tightens and loosens to fit babies as they grow.

Our least favorite part of the bouncer is its assembly: It arrives in more than five pieces and they all require some assembly. For example, the frame pieces installed into the feet and the seat cover needed to be put on, which was the most complicated step. It took us several tries to get the cover on without looking at the manual first. Once we looked at the instructions (which are super straightforward), the step became much easier, with the secret being you need to angle the bouncer. Once fully assembled, the bouncer is solid and sturdy and doesn't wobble from side to side with or without its sandbag weight.

Though the Baby Trend EZ Bouncer doesn't fold for portability, it's super light to transport from room to room. Moreover, it's small enough to store in a corner or walk-in closet. For $55, this baby bouncer is an absolute steal.

Pros
  • Padded safety harness

  • Modern, sleek design

  • Storage pocket on back of seat

Cons
  • Doesn’t fold

  • Metal bar makes assembly challenging

Sleek and appealing, the Childhome Evolux Bouncer is nice to look at (and use) with its beech wood legs and metal detailing. We love the mesh fabric that provides plenty of breathability for babies and is soft to the touch. You can also purchase the bouncer with a removable and machine-washable seat cover (line dry only). The padded safety harness on both styles provides additional comfort.

The buckles on the restraint system are easy to manipulate and adjust like straps you’d find on a backpack; you just need to wiggle them out of the seat cover (when applicable). There’s even a storage pocket on the back of the seat, which is big enough to hold small toys or a package of wipes. Overall, the design of this baby bouncer is straightforward, as it doesn’t recline or offer any special features. Babies bounce using their natural movement.

While the company says the bouncer is pre-assembled, that’s only partially true. The bouncer has two screws, two washers, and an Allen wrench to attach the seat to the frame. A lower bar that runs horizontally interferes with the Allen wrench fully spinning, which was a bit challenging. We had to stop mid-screw each time, take the wrench out, and do several half-circles to screw in the piece. Otherwise, the assembly is easy (but slightly time-consuming), and the final step is sliding on the fabric cover. After we assembled the bouncer in the lab, we checked for stability. The bouncer lifts slightly off the ground without a sandbag, but we didn’t experience that with the sandbag in the seat. Instead, the bouncer shifted back and forth a little bit, though we never questioned if the unit was unsafe.

This baby bouncer is another pick on our list that doesn’t fold but reaps a narrow design to save space as much as possible. Like the other baby bouncers we tested, there’s no handle to carry the bouncer; you can just grab the frame one-handed to transport it. It weighs close to 10 pounds (8.3, to be exact), so while not the lightest option, it’s also not too heavy.

If you want a baby bouncer that blends with your nursery or home decor, the Childhome Evolux Bouncer is great. Its simplicity and wooden detail set it apart from other bouncers we tested.

Pros

  • Added features automatically shut off after 30 minutes

  • Machine washable/dryer safe seat pad

Cons
  • Circular design takes up more space

  • Doesn’t fold

Lights, music, action! The Ingenuity InLighten Bouncer is eye-catching, featuring a removable light-up toy bar and vibrations. The toy bar lights up, alternating between blue and purple lights, and features two plush toys to keep the baby busy. If your little one is crying, the bouncer plays several sounds to help calm them down, like soft melodies, white noise, and nature sounds. You can also make the bouncer vibrate with the push of a button. You'll need three size C batteries (not included) to use the lights, music, and vibration (it automatically shuts off after 30 minutes to save battery life). Babies can utilize these exciting features while reclining in one of two positions. We had no issues changing the recline levels thanks to clear instructions and labeled buttons.

Plush fabric lines the deep seat with removable padding that doubles as a tummy time mat. In addition to the padding, the seat cover can also be removed, and both are safe to toss in the washing machine if your baby has an accident. Plus, the cover is safe to tumble dry. The biggest downside of this bouncer's design is that it's circular, so it takes up more space than other options, like the Ergobaby 3-in-1 Evolve Baby Bouncer.

The Ingenuity baby bouncer arrives in a few pieces that snap into each other. We also had to connect wires in two areas for the lights, vibrations, and music. We appreciate how sturdy the bouncer feels once it's put together and when bouncing or vibrating. Buckling in the sandbag was a breeze during testing, and we love how the additional weight in the deep seat made it feel even more secure.

Despite its circular design creating a larger footprint, we're impressed with how lightweight the bouncer feels when carried across the lab. However, we don't recommend this baby bouncer for traveling, as it doesn't fold for portability. Moreover, it may not fit in every car trunk because it's not compact. We recommend this baby bouncer stay at home or at Grandma and Grandpa's house. This bouncer offers many great functions to entertain a baby, and the affordable price is the cherry on top.

Pros
  • Eye-catching, unique design

  • Machine washable seat pad

  • Stable empty and loaded

Cons
  • Large footprint/not portable

  • Shoulder straps must go in buckle before closing

The Bloom Coco Stylewood Lounger is one of the most beautiful pieces of baby gear we've tested. While the wood design reaps a large footprint, the entire unit is surprisingly lightweight. This bouncer works more like a rocker, but both motions work well on various floorings, like carpet, hardwood, and concrete.

The Bloom Coco Stylewood is the only bouncer on our list with an adjustable five-point safety harness instead of a three-point one. Just be sure the shoulder straps go into the buckle before closing and letting your baby rock (it's a step that's easy to miss).

Putting the sandbag into the padded seat and buckling it in (and unbuckling) during testing was seamless. The machine washable seat cover removes easily for cleaning by unsnapping metal buttons. Additionally, we appreciate the lack of nooks and crannies to clean if a baby has a blowout or spits up while bouncing.

Minimal assembly is necessary to use this baby bouncer; you only have to attach the seat cover to the frame with the two metal buttons. We rocked the bouncer several times while empty and with a baby doll and sandbag, and it never felt unstable. Adults can rock the bouncer manually or let their baby's natural movement do the work.

Unfortunately, this bouncer is heavier than others on our list, weighing 15.5 pounds due to the beautiful wood frame. It's large, too, so it's not ideal to take on a trip or transport often (maybe at all). We advise using both hands when moving the bouncer because it's somewhat difficult to grasp.

The Bloom Coco Stylewood is the highest-priced baby bouncer that we tested, but it's a fabulous bouncer that also works like a rocker and is easy to use. Plus, it's just downright pleasant to look at.

Pros
  • Folds completely flat

  • Bounce or rock options without batteries

  • Arrives fully assembled

Cons
  • Doesn’t bounce well

If you’re looking for a baby bouncer you can constantly move around or take on trips, the Maxi-Cosi Kori 2-in-1 Rocker is a solid pick. It earns our best portable spot for a good reason—it folds completely flat for storage and feels super lightweight, making it suitable for smaller spaces or transporting in the trunk of a car. To fold it, you pull a latch on the top of the seat, press a button simultaneously, and voilà.

The Maxi-Cosi Kori reaps a 2-in-1 design we love; babies can bounce or rock at three incline positions. To change the incline position, you only have to pull a latch at the top of the seat. If you want the bouncer to remain stationary, there are two latches to pull out under the frame that double as leg stands. Babies remain safe and sound with the unit’s three-point harness, which is easy to strap and unstrap, regardless of how you use the bouncer.

This Maxi-Cosi bouncer looks sleek, modern, and contemporary, with wood detailing and a padded ergonomic insert. While the cushioned insert is spot clean only, the company’s user manual says the seat cover is safe to toss in the washing machine. Simply unbuckle the harness on the sides, unsnap the buttons, and unzip the seat cover from the frame. Removing the seat cover and putting it back on takes some effort, but it’s a pretty straightforward process.

We love how this baby bouncer arrives fully assembled, so you don’t have to screw in any small pieces or snap parts on. It feels sturdy and doesn’t wobble, especially with a 15-pound sandbag inside. However, we noticed the additional weight made it difficult for the unit to “bounce.” The rocking motion was much more noticeable but still required some effort to get the rocker going.

The Kori is versatile, stylish, and easy to clean. While we think it functions better as a rocker than a bouncer, it’s still a wonderful unit you can take with you on vacation or to a relative’s house.

Pros
  • Slim design

  • Folds flat for storage

Cons
  • No head support for newborns

  • No shoulder straps for security during swaying

We love the amount of thought that went into the design of the Chicco E-Motion Auto-Glider and Bouncer. It’s sleek, modern-looking, and slim enough to store in small spaces despite being automated. The bouncer offers 10 minutes of a gliding motion, which can restart automatically thanks to motion-sensing technology when a baby naturally moves or if a parent nudges the unit.

You have to plug this bouncer into the wall with an AC adapter (included, but the cord is short), or you can use four AA batteries (not included). Moreover, you can press a button on the back of the frame to convert to a standard bouncer and prevent it from swaying. Three buttons on the side let you choose between music, volume control, and gliding. The gliding motion is more noticeable than bouncing, but the user manual clearly details how to use each function.

A three-point harness locks littles in safely and isn’t complicated to use, but it feels slightly flimsy. We wish it were a five-point harness with shoulder straps for newborns, especially for extra security while swaying. The 100% organic and polyester material is soft and free of fire retardants and other harsh chemicals. It’s effortless to slip the seat cover on and off for cleaning, whether spot cleaning or machine washing. Moreover, the company recommends wiping down the plastic parts of the bouncer, which is what we did in little to nearly no time at all.

A bit of assembly is necessary to use the Chicco E-Motion bouncer. It comes in three parts, the feet, back pad, and seat frame, and you only need one Philips-head screwdriver to install the feet. Assembly instructions are easy to understand, and we finished putting the bouncer together in less than three minutes. Once assembled, the bouncer feels solid and sturdy with and without a sandbag.

While we appreciate how compact the bouncer folds for storage, there’s no latch to keep it folded. When carrying it around the lab, the bouncer kept opening and closing. On the plus side, it’s super lightweight and uncomplicated to carry; just remember to pack extra batteries or bring the AC adapter.

The $100 price tag is fair for an automated bouncer that folds flat for ultimate portability. Due to the lack of shoulder straps and head support, we suggest this option for older babies with better head control.

How We Rated Baby Bouncers

  • 4.8 to 5 stars: These are the best baby bouncers we tested. We recommend them without reservation.
  • 4.5 to 4.7 stars: These baby bouncers are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.
  • 4.0 to 4.5 stars: We think these are great baby bouncers, but others are better.
  • 3.5 to 3.9 stars: These baby bouncers are just average.
  • 3.4 and below: We don't recommend baby bouncers with this rating; you won't find any on our list.

Baby Bouncers We Also Tested

  • Stokke Steps Bouncer: The Stokke Steps Bouncer has many great features we love, like its cushiony padding, adorable design, and a five-point harness—and it all arrives fully pre-assembled. However, we encountered too many problems with this bouncer during testing; from its confusing instructions to instability, the whole unit was difficult to use.
  • Baby Delight Alpine Wave Deluxe Bouncer: Our favorite feature of the Baby Delight Alpine Wave Deluxe is its portability. The bouncer folds flat, which is seamless, and stores under a couch with room to spare. Unfortunately, the seat cover is not removable, so you must spot clean messes. And the bouncer feels more flimsy than sturdy—we thought the bouncing feature needed to be more moderate. One of our editors used this bouncer when her child was a baby and said her little one fell out of the bouncer despite being strapped in properly.
  • Bright Starts Portable Baby Bouncer: Playful and interactive, this Bright Starts baby bouncer is full of fun, from its adorable designs to its removable toy bar. Sadly, the toy bar flew off during the stability test, and its large footprint isn’t ideal for small spaces. Moreover, we thought the bouncer moved too much across the floor (when bouncing) with and without the sandbag.

How We Tested Baby Bouncers

To begin our research into the best baby bouncers, we spoke with Elizabeth Murray, DO, MBA, FAAP,  a board-certified pediatrician at the University of Rochester Medical Center, faculty director for Child Health and Safety Communications at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY, and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Benjamin Hoffman, MD, CPST-I, FAAP, a professor of pediatrics at the Oregon Health & Science University, AAP president-elect, and chair of the AAP Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention; and Molly O’Shea, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician at Birmingham Pediatrics in Michigan. All three experts provided us with valuable information regarding baby bouncer safety and what to look for when buying a bouncer. In addition, we reviewed guidance from the AAP, WHO, and CDC on how to keep a baby safe in a bouncer and how long a child can use one.

After studying the pros and cons of dozens of baby bouncers on the market, we narrowed our list down to 16 options that met the safety criteria and guidelines suggested by our experts. Then, seven parenting editors evaluated them at the Verywell Testing Lab in New York City, with the help of Ebony Barrett, PNP, a board-certified neonatal nurse practitioner. We assessed each baby bouncer on several attributes, including assembly, design, stability, ease of use, portability, ease of cleaning, and overall value.

Before our test, we equipped our editors with weighted sandbags (15 and 25 pounds) to replicate a baby’s weight, timers and stopwatches, tool kits for assembly, and batteries for the bouncers that require them. To test the products, we carefully read the manufacturer’s directions to set up each bouncer. If the bouncer required assembly, we set timers to see how long the process took, making notes of steps required and challenges. Next, we measured each bouncer, placed them on a level and stable ground, and installed batteries when applicable. We then assessed each bouncer’s stability (or instability) by lightly bouncing the unit before checking for a removable, machine-washable cover and other features, such as a toy bar, newborn insert, and more.

After an initial stability test, we strapped the sandbags using the restraint systems, following the manufacturer’s instructions. We asked parenting editors to use the sandbag closest to their bouncer’s maximum weight limit without going over. For example, if a bouncer had a 20-pound weight limit, we buckled in a 15-pound sandbag. However, for weight limits over 20 pounds, we used the 25-pound sandbag. We then consulted with our on-site expert to determine whether the bouncers seemed safe, stable, and solid and if we used the buckles correctly. Next, we nudged the bouncers to simulate a baby kicking or an adult manually moving the bouncer, making notes of responsiveness and range of motion.

When applicable, we adjusted reclines and tested the bouncer on each setting before consulting with the on-site nurse. We wanted to know if the incline was suitable for a baby with little head or neck control or if the incline was better for older babies who could hold their heads and necks independently.

Following the incline test, we removed the sandbags from the bouncers and folded the units when possible. We looked for ease of use or difficulty, folded sizes, and if the bouncer was effortless to carry from one end of the lab to the other.

What to Look for in a Baby Bouncer

Safety

Be sure to double-check the bouncer’s age and weight recommendations; while they may say they’re safe for newborns, not all newborns weigh the same. You want to avoid putting a 5-pound baby in a seat with a minimum weight of 8 pounds. Misusing a baby bouncer can result in injury or possibly death.

Look for a three- or five-point safety harness and stable base. A restraint system keeps a baby from sliding around, whether bouncing from their natural movement or with help from their grown-up. Another safety feature to consider is the bouncer’s recline. According to Dr. Murray, the greater the incline, the more likely a baby is to slouch. She adds that the younger the baby, the more reclined they should be because they lack head control. If you plan to use the bouncer with a newborn, your best bet is to look for a unit with a newborn insert, such as the Ergobaby 3-IN-1 Evolve Baby Bouncer and Ingenuity InLighten Bouncer.

Lastly, always place the bouncer on level ground. Never put the bouncer on a soft bed or another soft surface due to the risk of the unit tipping over or babies suffocating.

Design

Some bouncers are pretty basic and straightforward, while others can convert or collapse for portability. Consider the space you’re working with before purchasing; a circular baby bouncer has a larger footprint than a narrow style, for example. Circular bouncers, like the Baby Trend EZ Bouncer, fare better in one place, while more narrow designs, such as the BabyBjörn Bouncer Bliss, often fold so you can store it in a closet (or under a couch like we did in the lab). Moreover, if you need to save room or transport the bouncer, look for a unit that folds, like the Maxi-Cosi Kori 2-in-1 Rocker

Many bouncers go beyond your basic bouncing and include additional features, like the Ingenuity InLighten Bouncer, which has a toy bar, music, and vibrations. According to Dr. Murray, minimal, smooth motion and stimulation moderation are key, because the more you stimulate a baby, the more stimulation they will expect, she explains. While added features like a toy bar or vibrations are great for keeping a baby entertained, they’re not always necessary.

Ease of Cleaning

Machine-washable fabric is your best friend. Babies are bound to have a blowout or spit up, so a seat cover you can quickly toss in the washer and dryer will save you lots of clean-up time. Always check the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations to ensure the fabric lasts long and doesn’t ruin with improper washing or drying.

Most of the time, you can wipe down the baby bouncer’s frame, but refer to your unit’s manual first. Some baby bouncers feature a wooden frame, so you may not want to use certain cleaners on the material.

Cost

We tested baby bouncers from $30 to $289 from brands like BabyBjörn, Stokke, Ergobaby, and more. Most baby bouncers cost between $75 to $200, but expect to pay more for a unique design, like the Bloom Coco Stylewood Lounger ($289), and high-end brands. Moreover, some baby bouncers offer separate accessories, like a toy bar, which will be an additional cost at check-out.

We also tested several great baby bouncers with low price tags, like the Baby Trend EZ Bouncer ($55) and Ingenuity InLighten Baby Bouncer ($78).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When can a baby use a bouncer?

Your baby can start using a bouncer as a newborn, but this depends on the manufacturer's weight limits. Many bouncers begin with weight limits of around 5 to 8 pounds, so double-check your bouncer’s manual.

The AAP suggests parents discontinue using baby bouncers when their baby reaches 20 pounds, can sit up on their own, or when they reach the bouncer’s weight limit.

  • How long can a baby be in a bouncer chair?

Infants under 12 months should not be in a bouncer for more than one hour at a time. Children who spend less time restrained in a seat get better quality sleep and have more time for active play, like tummy time. We’re not implying you have to hold your baby 24/7 (because that’s unrealistic); you’ll just want to watch the time to ensure your little one moves throughout the day.

  • Baby swing vs. bouncer: What's the difference?

The biggest difference between a baby bouncer and a swing is that a bouncer moves naturally, while swings are usually electric or battery-powered. For example, a baby’s natural kicking movement or a parent manually pushing a bouncer cause it to move. With a baby swing, the unit may swing side-to-side or front-to-back thanks to an electric or battery-powered motor.

Baby swings and bouncers can help calm an upset little one or be used during supervised awake time if you need a break.

Unfortunately, baby swings don’t typically fold, so they’re not travel-friendly like baby bouncers, which often fold to compact sizes. On the other hand, baby swings take the manual work out of pushing a baby bouncer. However, both options require you to keep an eye on your little one to ensure they don’t fall asleep in the unit.

  • Can a baby sleep in a bouncer?

The AAP, WHO, CDC, Dr. O’Shea, Dr. Hoffman, and Dr. Murray all agree that a baby should never sleep in a bouncer. According to Dr. O’Shea, bouncers sit at an incline, so a baby can move their head to a chin-to-chest or chin-to-shoulder position, blocking their airway or causing them to rebreathe their own carbon dioxide.

If your baby falls asleep in a bouncer, immediately move them to a safe sleep space (crib, play yard, or bassinet). Dr. O'Shea warns that even if you’re sitting nearby and watching, your baby is still at risk if they sleep in a bouncer.
