Natural Mat makes three versions of its organic crib mattress. The Coco Mat (about $375) is made with organic coir (coconut fibers wrapped in latex) surrounded by lambswool that has been dipped in botanical extracts to make the mattress resist dust mites. For allergy sufferers, the Latex Mat (about $500) has a core of natural rubber latex surrounded by a coir layer and the same lambswool layer to create an allergy-safe organic crib mattress. For a more supportive option, the Mohair Mat (about $625) is made with a horsetail hair base between layers of organic coir. The outside layer is super-soft mohair fleece. Fits standard U.S. size cribs.
2. Pixel Organics Refill Organic Crib Mattress
Pixel Organics' Refill Organic crib mattresses combine organic materials with another eco-friendly concept - recycling. Beneath the soft, quilted organic cotton and wool cover is a firm layer of polyethylene fibers made from recycled plastic bottles. Not only are these organic crib mattresses handmade in the U.S., they come in at a lower price than many other organic options. The Refill crib mattress costs about $175. The No-Compromise Organic Cotton crib mattress from Naturepedic is a nice, lower-cost option. This innerspring mattress has organic cotton filling, an organic cotton waterproof cover, and starts at about $250. Naturepedic also makes a Cotton Ultra version for about $350 that has an upgraded cover and a bit more support at the center. The Cotton and Cotton Ultra mattresses have a dust-mite barrier, too.
