Recent Child Safety Seat Recalls

By , About.com Guide

Sometimes companies must recall child safety seats in order to better protect your baby. You should register your baby's car safety seats with the manufacturer to receive quick notification of any recalls, and it's also a good idea to check NHTSA's extensive recall list if you borrow a child safety seat from a friend or need to use an older car seat again after a period of non-use. These child safety seat recalls have been issued more than six months ago, but are still worth taking a look at, since car seat recalls are easily missed if you aren't registered with the manufacturer. Click the headline links for further recall information from NHTSA or the child safety seat manufacturer.

This is the second page of car seat recall notices. You can use the page number links below to view more recent or older car seat recalls.

Graco ComfortSport Frazier Convertible Car Seats
Dec. 9, 2008 - More than 40,000 Graco ComfortSport convertible car seats in the Frazier pattern are recalled because the large supplemental pad, or body pillow, partially obscures the airbag warning on the seat pad. Partial obscuring of the label means that the car seat doesn't comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213, "child restraint systems." Affected model numbers are 8C04FRR and 8C04FRR2. These car seats were manufactured between Nov. 1, 2006 and Oct. 8, 2007. Graco will notify registered owners and instruct them to discard the supplemental body pillow, which is designed only for comfort and not for increased crash protection. Call 800-345-4109 for more information.

Baby Trend Rigid Latch-Loc Infant Car Seat Base Recall
June 28, 2008 - More than 3,500 bases for the Baby Trend Rigid Latch-Loc infant car seat are recalled because the wrong type of steel was used on part of the LATCh connector. The LATCh connector locking pawl can crack, which could allow the base to detach from the LATCh anchors in a crash. Models 6400, 6439, 6448, 6481 and 6484 are included. Registered owners will be notified. Call 800-328-7363 for information. Baby Trend will replace the recalled bases free of charge.

Chicco KeyFit and KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seats Recall
June 2, 2008 - Chicco has issued a voluntary recall for the bases that go with some KeyFit and KeyFit 30 infant car seats, and some Cortina travel systems. One some bases, when the base is installed with LATCH, the LATCH strap can slip through the adjustment lock, which could allow too much movement in a crash. Click the headline link for manufacture dates, model numbers and instructions for receiving a replacement base. In the meantime, you should install the base using the vehicle seatbelts instead of LATCH.

Evenflo Discovery Infant Car Seat Recall
Apr. 5, 2008 - More than 1,000 Evenflo Discovery infant car seats are recalled because they may have been produced without complete assembly of the release handle on the back of the seat. This could allow the seat to separate from the base, causing serious injury to the child. Only Discovery car seats produced on Feb. 4 2008 and with model numbers 3021769Z and 3021854Z are included. If the model number does not start with 302 and end with Z it is not recalled. Call 800-233-5921 for a replacement car seat. Use the car seat without the convenience base while you wait for the replacement to arrive.

Graco CarGo Car Seat Recall
Mar. 17, 2008 - About 121,000 Graco CarGo car seats are recalled because the NHTSA hotline phone number printed on a label on the back of the seat is incorrect. The phone number should be 1-888-327-4236. This issue does not affect the safety of the car seat in a crash. Click the headline link for affected model numbers and for a link to order a new label.

Combi Centre/Shuttle Infant Car Seat Recall
Mar. 3, 2008 - About 67,000 Combi Centre and Shuttle infant car seats are recalled because additional crash testing showed a potential for the seat to separate from the base. The company indicates that these car seats do meet the minimum federal safety standards, and that this recall is based on additional testing to enhance the safety of the seat. All Combi Centre, Shuttle and Centre ARB infant car seats manufactured between Oct. 2005 and Dec. 2007 are affected, including those sold with travel systems. Call 800-543-7734 for a free retrofit kit that addresses the potential problem. Combi urges parents to use these car seats without the base until the retrofit kit is installed.

Recaro Como/Signo Car Seat Recall
Feb. 23, 2008 - Recaro is recalling Como and Signo car seats manufactured prior to Dec. 18, 2007. The harness may disconnect from the harness connector when the child is put in or taken out of the seat. This means that the child may not actually be secured to the seat and could be seriously injured in a crash. If you own one of these seats, call 800-8-RECARO to receive a repair kit with rubber caps for the harness connector to cover gaps that might allow the harness to disconnect.

Evenflo Discovery Infant Car Seat Recall
Feb. 1, 2008 - Evenflo is recalling 1,000,000 Discovery infant car seats because recent crash tests showed that the car seat could separate from its base in high-speed side impact collisions. Discovery models 390, 391, 534 and 552 made from Apr. 2005 through Jan. 2008, and associated travel systems, are affected. Registered owners will receive a free supplemental dual-hook fastener to ensure that the car seat remains attached to the base. If you did not register your car seat, call Evenflo at 800-356-2229.

Team-Tex BabyRide Infant Car Seat
Jan. 30, 2008 - Nearly 800 Team-Tex BabyRide infant car seats are recalled because the belt-routing labels are incorrect, making the horizontal reference line incorrect. The belts could be misrouted or the car seat can be installed with too much recline if only the horizontal reference line is used to achieve angle. Model 374099, manufactured on Aug. 31, 2006 and Oct. 23, 2006 are affected. Registered owners will receive labels and instructions. Others should call Team-Tex at 877-912-1313.
