Diaper cakes are almost a staple of baby showers today. Whether you make one yourself or purchase one ready-made, this is a stylish way to present a mom-to-be with a gift of diapers. Diaper Cakewalk sells ready-made diaper cakes in several varieties via an online store. I received a Diaper Cakewalk Activity Piggy diaper cake from the company to review. My review is based on an assessment of the quality, style, function, available options and value for price of the diaper cake.
Diaper Cakewalk Activity Piggy Diaper Cake Features
This is a four-tier diaper cake with about 70 Pampers Swaddlers diapers included. The diapers are rolled around a cardboard tube to form the cake layers. Ribbons hold the layers together, and for the Activity Piggy diaper cake, the ribbons are soft pink with white dots. Burts Bees bath supplies are attached around the cake, either tucked into the ribbons or attached to the ribbons with glue. There are seven travel-size bath products attached, including diaper cream, shampoo and soap. Three baby washcloths and a pacifier are also attached to the front, and a plush Bright Beginnings activity pig toy is hugging the side of the cake. The whole cake is wrapped in tulle and tied with a bow.
What I Like About Diaper Cakewalk Activity Piggy Diaper Cake
I expected that a diaper cake shipped across the country would look a little worse for the wear, so I was pleasantly surprised to pull a nearly perfect diaper cake from the box. The diapers are rolled together tightly and the ribbons are all secure, so the whole thing stays together very nicely. The tulle wrapper ensures that nothing can go very far if a piece did fall off in transit, plus the wrapper, with its pretty bow at the top, makes the diaper cake look very nice right out of the box.
The diapers that are included are a premium variety, versus the discount cheapies that some diaper companies use. All of the baby care supplies are made by Burts Bees, which is also a premium brand. The plush toy is of good quality, from the Russ Bright Beginnings line, and has buttons, snaps and zippers on it so it's an activity toy instead of just something that will sit on a shelf.
I like that the diapers are rolled around a tube instead of just rolled tightly individually. Rolled this way, only the innermost diapers are curled very much when you remove them from the diaper cake. If you'll be putting the diapers into a diaper stacker or want to store them neatly in a basket, having diapers that want to curl back into coils can be annoying. The majority of the diapers on this diaper cake aren't rolled enough to be permanently curled up.
This diaper cake was well-made and the attention to detail makes it stand out. It's attractive and sturdy.
What I Don't Like About Diaper Cakewalk Activity Piggy Diaper Cake
The biggest downfall of this and many other diaper cakes is the price. The Diaper Cakewalk Activity Piggy diaper cake costs about $100, plus shipping. Considering that you can buy twice as many of the same diapers for about half that, the price is a bit steep. Some of that is labor costs, of course, which can seem high for hand-made items. The price issue isn't unique to Diaper Cakewalk's diaper cakes. On the up-side, most of the "ingredients" are name-brand, better-quality items, so you're getting decent products for the price.
My only complaint about any of the included items is that two of the washcloths are the very basic, thin, Gerber variety with no trim on the edges, and in my experience this type tends to fall apart quickly once washed. One of the washcloths does have trimmed edges.
Should You Buy a Diaper Cakewalk Diaper Cake?
If you're looking for a pre-made diaper cake, I think Diaper Cakewalk is a good company to buy from. The materials used are of good quality and the diaper cake I received was well-made with attention shown to the finish details and overall style. This is not a diaper cake that someone slapped together and charged for, which you can, unfortunately, find in many places on the 'net. Certainly, making your own diaper cake would be a less costly option, but sometimes you may willing to pay for the convenience of someone else doing the work. If so, Diaper Cakewalk does the job well.
If the pink Activity Piggy diaper cake isn't your style, Diaper Cakewalk also offers myriad other themed diaper cakes in girl, boy and neutral color schemes. There's even an eco-friendly diaper cake with Seventh Generation diapers. If you'd like something at a lower price, you can choose from several smaller cakes with fewer diapers and less decoration. For the ultimate in diaper cakes, there's even a diaper castle with turrets and ribbons.
If the idea of making your own diaper cake appeals to you but you don't want the hassle of bundling all of those diapers tightly, Diaper Cakewalk offers plain diaper cakes that you can decorate yourself.
All of these diaper cakes can be shipped fairly quickly, and as I said, you can be reasonably sure the diaper cake will be packaged well so it looks nice when it arrives. If you need an emergency baby shower gift and you're willing to pay for the rush charges, Diaper Cakewalk can even overnight you a diaper cake.
