Disposable Toddler Potty Training Pants

By , About.com Guide

What Are Disposable Toddler Training Pants?:
A step between diapers and toddler-size underwear, disposable toddler training pants give parents the convenience of absorbent, diaper-like pants while giving toddlers the feeling that they have graduated from diapers to big kid pants. Disposable training pants are often more trim than disposable diapers, and they don't have tabs like a diaper. Some brands have sides that tear apart easily for easier cleanup when potty training accidents happen. These disposable training pants are often referred to as pull-ups, which is actually a brand name of disposable training pants made by Huggies.
How Might Disposable Training Pants Help With Potty Training?:
Toddlers often need motivation to get started on potty training. One way to motivate toddlers is something new that seems more grown-up, and disposable training pants work well in that regard since they a more like regular underwear. Toddlers feel more in control of the potty training process because they can more easily get their own pants on and off. Disposable training pants often aren't as absorbent than diapers, so messes are noticeable, which motivates toddlers to use the potty. Some disposable training pants have fun characters on them, and some even have wetness indicators to help toddlers want to stay dry.
Disposable Training Pants vs. Diapers:
Disposable training pants give toddlers a little more control, since it's easier to pull them on and take them off. Disposable diapers are more absorbent, but the stay-dry liners on diapers often make it hard for toddlers to feel their accidents, so it's more difficult to associate the feeling of wetness with a need to go use the potty. Disposable training pants do allow the toddler to feel more of the wetness, but still absorb the mess, so parents don't have to clean up messes. Both options require a diaper pail or other disposal method, but neither require laundry. Disposable training pants cost more than diapers.
Disposable Training Pants vs. Cloth Training Pants:
Cloth training pants are a more environmentally friendly option since they're reusable, but they require frequent laundering, which can be a hassle for busy parents. Disposable training pants may be cheaper per unit than cloth, but over time the cost advantage goes to the reusable option. It may be easier for toddlers to feel and respond to their accidents with cloth training pants, but cloth training pants are not absorbent. Disposable training pants offer absorbency so parents don't have to wash a toddler's outfit or clean up the couch when an accident happens.
Disposable Training Pants Pros:
For many families, disposable training pants provide a key step between diapers and regular toddler underwear. They offer toddlers the thrill of something new, some additional motivation to stay dry, since messes are felt more than with diapers, and they give toddlers more of a sense of independence since they can pull the pants up or down when it's time to use the potty. Parents can hand a little bit of the responsibility over to their toddler without having to clean up full outfits, car seats or furniture when the inevitable accidents happen.
Disposable Training Pants Cons:
The cost of disposable training pants can really add up if your toddler needs to use them for a long time, especially if you need to use several per day. Some parents feel that disposable training pants actually delay potty training because they aren't different enough from diapers to provide enough motivation for a toddler to use the potty. Some disposable training pants brand are prone to leaks that mean parents end up with more messes to clean up.
