Definition: A pouch is a very simple baby carrier made of a loop of fabric that wear like you would a baby sling, so that the loop goes over one shoulder and forms a pouch for baby when the wide fabric is folded over. Pouches can be used for most of the same carries as baby slings, but the style of carrier is simpler, with no rings or tails. Some baby pouches have parts of the fabric loop sewn together to make a more structured pouch shape.
Most pouch baby carriers must be ordered by size because they are not adjustable like other types of baby carriers. There are a few baby pouches that offer some adjustability, though. One of the best-known baby pouch manufacturers, Kangaroo Korner, gives babywearers some flexibility in pouch sizing through rows of snaps that take up extra fabric or let it out to change the size.
Baby pouch carriers are preferred for their ease of use, their poppability, and the ease of stashing them in a diaper bag or purse, since the simple style generally means they pack small.
