Definition: Carrying a baby on your hip is a fairly natural position, and many baby carriers allow you to accomplish this position while keeping your hands mostly free. This is known as the hip carry, or hip straddle, in babywearing. Many types of baby carriers can be used for the hip carry, including slings, pouches, wraps and some structured-type carriers. The baby must be able to hold his or her head up, as this is primarily a sitting position, so it's really a babywearing hold for older babies and toddlers.
Baby's legs are positioned on either side of the adult's hip, outside of the carrier, as though the baby is sitting on the adult's hip, except that the carrier support's the baby's weight, leaving the adult's hands free.
