What Makes a Good Disposable Diaper?

Friday August 21, 2009

When my daughter was a newborn, there was only one diaper that seemed to fit her very well at all - Pampers Swaddlers - because she was so tiny that she lacked those baby fat rolls that serve to hold diapers in place for most kids. As she got older, my loyalty to the brand waned in favor of cheaper diapers, so she was a Luvs girl until potty training. For me, the right fit and price are what make a good disposable diaper, but the low price can't come with a leaky trade-off. The cheaper store brands I tried seemed to feel wet on the outside or had weird smells. I never did find one I liked.

What makes a good disposable diaper for you? On the best disposable diapers poll, Huggies is the overwhelming victor, so clearly price is not the biggest factor for most parents when buying disposable diapers. Is it fit? Cute designs on the tabs? Does Huggies have the best shape to fit the widest range of babies? Weigh in through the comments link below with your thoughts on what makes a disposable diaper worthy of purchase.

For me, it was fit. Pampers seemed to work best for my boys but the girls were/are in Huggies since they’ve been out of the newborn/size 1 Swaddlers.

I’m super sensitive to smell, I could never find a cheaper diaper that I could tolerate. They also seem a little softer on the baby bits

We’ve tried them all (Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, Seventh Generation & store brands) and Luvs work the best for us during day time. They don’t have that weird perfume-y smell and seem to fit him just fine. He leaks through them at night, though.

So, we tried the Huggies Overnights. They worked fine for containing the urine, but he woke up in the middle of the night every time I put one on him. I don’t know if it’s because they’re so stiff, or what, but there was something about them that bugged the baby. I finally used them up during naps.

We’ve used the Pampers Cruisers Ultra Absorbent at night time for a while, and he’s starting to consistently leak through again. ARGH!

People had bought a lot of diapers for us before we had our son 4 months ago. So we had many different brands. All the pampers brands always seemed to leak at night! I hated it! He went through many diapers and 2 sleepers every night. Then we used the Huggies and we didn’t have to change him at all! Then he started sleeping through the night. We had a huge backslide when we put him in some Pampers that were bought for us and he kept waking up in the middle of the night soaked through! We soon moved him back to the Huggies and now he sleeps from 10 pm-9am without soaking through! Huggies wins my vote for just that reason. When the Pampers got over wet also, they would leave little beads on him. I also hated that!
