Retailers Recall 400,000 Simplicity Cribs
Plastic hardware that can break or deform is the reason behind a new recall of 400,000 Simplicity drop-side cribs. When the hardware doesn't work properly, the drop sides can detach, creating a gap that can entrap and suffocate a child. One death has been reported as a result of a plastic connector breaking. All Simplicity cribs with a flexible plastic tab at the top of the lower drop-side tracks are included in the recall. Model numbers include, but may not be limited to, 8050, 8325, 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8765, 8778, 8810, and 8994, 8995, 8996.
If you have a recalled Simplicity crib in your home, stop using it immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a refund, replacement or store credit. Please note that it is not the crib manufacturer (Simplicity / SFCA) handling this recall. Retailers are handling the recall since the manufacturer will not.
This is not the first time retailers have had to pick up responsibility for SFCA's recalled baby products. In August 2008, retailers had to issue their own recall of Simplicity Close-Sleeper Bassinets following two infant deaths due to entrapment. The company also no longer supplies repair kits for the one million previously recalled Simplicity drop-side cribs, which lead CPSC to tell parents their best option was to throw those cribs away, even if they thought the drop-sides were correctly installed.
