Keeping Baby Safe Around The House

Sunday January 4, 2009
As your baby grows, he or she will want to explore, which usually leads to a few messes. For my daughter, it was the diaper cream she found and spread all over the bathroom one afternoon while I was on a conference call. Beyond the messes, though, babies and toddlers can be injured when they get into products or places that are beyond their newfound skills. Childproofing your home can help prevent injuries, as can a few other safety practices.

Keeping an eye on baby products recalls is also a good way to prevent injuries. Many children are injured each year by products that break, have small parts, lead paint or some other issue. Watching for recalls might mean the difference between reporting an injury from a product or preventing one. If you have older children, it's also a good idea to remind them often to keep their toys out of reach of your younger kids. Toys for older kids are not designed to be handled or chewed on by babies or toddlers, and can have small parts or other hazards that could cause injury.
