Hot Baby Products: Tot Lok Magnetic Cabinet Latches
Securing your kitchen and bathroom cabinets with latches is an essential part of childproofing. It can be difficult to find cabinet latches that work with your cabinet hardware, or that are easy to operate. I often wondered if our cabinet latches were made to just keep everyone out of the silverware drawer. Tot Lok magnetic cabinet latches address many of the common problems found with cabinet latches, though. They fit almost any type of cabinet, they're easy to operate, and they hide inside the cabinet, so you don't have giant plastic latches dangling all over the kitchen. All you have to do is install the cabinet pieces, then touch a magnet key to the cabinet you want to open. I also like that you can disable the Tot Loks by flipping a little switch on the cabinet portions.
Of course, there are downsides to almost any childproofing product. Tot Locks work well, but you do have to use screws to attach them to your cabinets, so they may not be a good option for renters. They're also more expensive than most cabinet latches. You'll also want to be careful to install the Tot Loks in about the same spot on each door if possible, so you don't have to hunt around with the magnet key to find the right spot to unlock the door. Generally, the ease of use of Tot Loks outweighs the drawbacks. If you're looking for a simple way to childproof cabinets that won't distract from the look of your kitchen, Tot Loks may be the perfect choice for you.
