CPSC Warns About Simplicity "Close Sleeper" Bassinets

Thursday August 28, 2008
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging parents and caregivers to stop using Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible "Close Sleeper" Bassinets after two infants died while using the product. Both children were under 6 months old, and both died when they became entrapped in the bassinet's metal bars and were strangled. The bars are spaced more than 2-3/8 inches apart, which is the maximum distance allowed by federal crib safety standards. Though the bars are intended to be covered by a fabric flap, if the flap is not properly adjusted it can allow the baby to slip through.

Despite the two deaths from these bassinets, no official recall has been issued yet. Simplicity Inc.'s assets were purchased at public auction in April 2008 by SFCA Inc., and SFCA Inc. refuses to cooperate with CPSC to recall the bassinets. Sadly, the company believes it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity Inc.

CPSC believes that these products pose a significant risk to children, and has issued a safety warning regarding the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible "Close Sleeper" Bassinets that can be used as a bedside sleeper and bassinet. This warning does not cover newer bassinets that have the fabric flap permanently fixed over the metal bars. Please pass this warning along to friends, day care providers, grandparents, other caregivers and second-hand baby products stores to help make sure no more children can be injured or killed by this dangerous product.

Please join me in writing letters to this company concerning this. This bassinet needs to be recalled!

Dear Simplicity Company:

I am writing today in regards to your 3-1 bassinet. It has come to my attention that the bassinet, that I have now used for one of my child and planned to use for another is a dangerous product. It has claimed the lives of two infants due to the poor placement of the metal bars and manufactoring of the cover.

I find it disturbing to hear that you will not be issuing a recall, or even a repair kit for this product. I have a very nice, very expensive bassinet sitting in storage that I can no longer use. I understand that your company does not consider its self responsible because this product was manufactored prior to the buy out. I find it sad that you would allow the bottom line of your company to guide your judgement over a product and has killed children. A company I believed prided itsself in manufacturing safe, top of the line products for children.

I will not be using this bassinet because I value the lives of my children over my pocket book. I hope that you will soon release some sort of repair kit or recall so that I can use my product. Until you take action on this situation, I will no longer be purchasing simplicity products. I will also spread word about the bad business practices you are using and the careless attitude you seem to have about the safety of infants.

One very dissatified former customer,

Jessica *****

Simplicity For Children,

I am sad to hear you are not issuing a recall on the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets. As a pregnant woman, I will not purchase any “Simplicity” brand products. We decided on the “Ellis” crib but seeing how the company is “not handling” the recall on the bassinet we have decided we should purchase a different brand of crib and will not buy anything in the future with the “Simplicity” name brand. I am very glad we did not already purchase the crib because it might have been manufactured before CFCA purchased Simplicity in April 2008. I will however, tell every mom I know to beware of CFCA and their bad business practices.

I pray that no more babies are hurt or die in the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets.

SFCA, Inc;

I already sent you an email but I am also posting here. I own one of these bassinets, and I will not be buying any more of your products because of the poor way in which it is being handled. I understand you don’t feel responsible for the defective products because you bought Simplicity after these products were manufactured, however it’s your company now and you need to step up and deal with it and it’s problems. I want satisfaction!

As a pregnant woman, I am always looking for products. Coming across this website is quite a disappointment. I would have thought your parctices would have imporved after the troubles with your combination crib, changing table, and dresser set. (which it took me over 5 months to get replacement parts for and still the crib was non-functionable). It seems it just gets worse. Shame on you, especially for thinking any family would want to use your product. You had less then adequate answers with my crib, and now again.

I helped my friends return their bassinet after Wal-Mart first would not accept it backonce this recall was announced. We went back and looked at what other beds they had for babies, and lo and behold: the bassinet was still being sold there. Different company name-Disney now-warning on it to use only from 0 to 3 months, different model number, but there it was, nothing was changed. So if you buy from Wal-Mart, watch out for this bassinet!!!
