Reader Question: Should I Move My Toddler to a Booster?
Thursday April 3, 2008
Q: My 3-year-old seems tall for his car seat. Can I move him to a booster now?
A: Not if there are other options available to you to keep him in a harnessed car seat for a while longer. Children under age 4 are rarely mature enough to sit still in a booster seat, and staying in the proper position in the seatbelt is the key to safe booster use. I also suggest that you not move a child to a booster seat until he or she weighs at least 40 pounds, unless there are outside factors that warrant the switch. For more reasons to keep your child in a harnessed seat as long as possible, check out my article on moving a toddler to a booster seat.
