Toxic Car Seats? Don't Panic Just Yet.

Monday May 21, 2007
A Michigan environmental group recently released a report indicating that toxic chemicals, including lead and bromine, could be leaching from children's car seats. Of the 62 car seat models that were tested, 30 percent are said to have high levels of chemicals. It's important to remember two things when considering this report, though. One, the report merely shows that these chemicals are present in some car seats, as they are in many consumer products. The report does not show any real-life examples of harm to children due to chemicals in car seats. Two, the benefits of using a car seat for your child far outweigh the risks presented in this report.

While the presence of chemicals in children's products is of concern, the chemical levels are just one more potential danger to weigh, but are not likely to pose an immediate threat to your child's health or safety. Parents who are concerned about chemicals used in manufacturing car seats should contact car seat manufacturers to promote change, but should continue to use car seats in the meantime.

If you'd like to read the report on toxic car seats, it is found at HealthyCar.org. Please note that you have to register with the group before viewing the study information.

All these nutjobs think that everything is toxic and it’s going to kill them. This just goes to show how silly and delusional most people are nowdays.

Wow, Jessica. Can you possibly know that these toxins in our environment don’t accumulate over time to cause things such as cancer and immune disorders? Newborns and children have lower immunity and such chemicals could have an adverse effect on them- not to mention parents. Thank you Heather for bringing this to the attention of all concerned. Toxic chemicals have no place in our our environment and there should be healthier alternatives to them.
